Recently, my best friend sent me a Facebook post, “What Are the First Four Words You See? These will be your Focus for 2021”. Usually I look at things such as this as pure fun. But the four words I saw opened my eyes.
My four words were Create, Love, Gratitude, and Travel.
Create. As I launch a new small business and I am my own boss for the first time, I am definitely in the process of Creating and Transition. Seeing that word made me really think about what is that I want to “Create”. I want to create more than a coaching practice aimed at making profit for myself, while that is a goal, there is so much more I want. I want to create a safe space for my clients to feel seen and heard and respected. I want to create a space filled with compassion and empathy. I want to create a space that is welcoming and absent judgement. I want to create a resource for the LGBT community. I want to create a coaching practice that enables my clients to confront their challenges and transitions with the correct skills and strategies. I want to create a practice focused on helping and empowering others.
Love. I believe Love is a basic human need. I believe we all want and need love. Love for me means many things. There is the Love we have for ourselves. The Love we have for our families and friends. The Love we have for all the other things that fill our lives. Love, for something that we really can’t see or touch, is an emotion that deeply felt. Wars have been fought over love. Love can give life or it can destroy it. Love is quite possibly the most powerful human experience. For me, there is the Love of the life I have created. I get to work with other LGBT people overcoming discrimination and hate and the obstacles in their lives. I get to help other LGBT individuals find self acceptance and authenticity and success. I get to do what I love.
Gratitude. Such a powerful word. Practicing Gratitude can change your life. This is how I do it… Everyday I wake up and I am bombarded with the suggestion that I need more, that I need the best, that I need the newest. I even hear the message that as I am ,I am not enough. When I start to feel overcome by these messages I pause, I breathe, and I look around me. As I sit here writing this I have so much to be grateful for. I have all the things I need right here. I have a home, food, and a job. I have a car and a bike and coffee and wifi. I have family and friends that love and appreciate me as I am. I have a 10 year old son that I adore and keeps me on my toes. I have the ability to hike and backpack this beautiful state that I call home. My physical and mental health is something I am grateful for. Are there things I want? Yes, there are. However, they are not necessary. They do not stand in the way of me experiencing true gratitude for this beautiful life I am living. I think that practicing Gratitude is one of the keys to happiness.
Travel. Yes!! Who doesn’t love travel and seeing new places? For many, travel is a family vacation or business trip. I know I love exploring new places and experiencing the thrill of seeing something beautiful for the first time. Even if it is just a short day trip or long weekend backpacking, I love it, it fills me up. Travel allows us to experience new cultures and people different from us. It opens our hearts and minds to more than just the circle we live our daily lives within. Travel teaches us about ourselves. Travel could even be a more spiritual event.
